THREE DIMENSIONAL DRAWING OF A ROAD IN DEEP SPACE WITH OBJECTS AND FIGURES CASTING SHADOWS
In this project the children the children learned that spatial depth in a picture can be created by manipulating size, light and perspective. In kindergarten the children learned that a small sail boat near a horizon line is far away, and a big boat near the bottom of the page is close. In this project the same logic was applied to people, shapes trees and cars on a plane. All these objects be they live or not cast a shadow which uses light to create a sense of solidity and place in space. Lastly the road disappears at a point on the horizon line called a vanishing point. This employs perspective to create a solidly three dimensional picture.
JAPANESE STYLE VASES WITH FLOWERS
In this project the children first studied the beautiful and elegant Japanese/Asian aesthetic found in their ceramics that are often painted in a rich and expressive blue. The children then cut vases and painted a simple flower/bird motif that was later glued onto black paper. Finally, the children painted flowers coming out of the vase and added one flower on the bottom to break up the lower edge of the vase and add balance to the composition. Moreover, the flower on the bottom of the composition establishes a sense of three dimensionality because the viewer's mind immediately accepts that the lower flower is resting on some sort of plane or "table" that in reality is not really seen although it must be there.
PRE-WAR, MODERN AND POST-MODERN BUILDING
IN A CITY AT NIGHT
In this project the children mined different source materials in order to create a modern cityscape with pre-war, modern and post-modern architecture. This project is crayon resist. (watercolor over crayon) What constitutes pre-war, classic modern and post-modern architecture was discussed in depth.
